Operation Golf

SPC’s international approach can be traced back to our directors’ involvement in Operation Golf. This was a joint UK-Romanian law enforcement initiative aimed at dismantling a large human trafficking network operating across Europe.

Launched in 2007, it was the first Joint Investigation Team (JIT) established in a human trafficking investigation. Operation Golf involved collaboration between the Metropolitan Police in London, Romanian police forces, Europol, and various other European agencies.

The criminal network primarily trafficked children, mainly from the Roma community, to the UK for forced labour, begging, and theft. The traffickers employed a highly organised system to exploit vulnerable children, often using coercion and violence. They moved children across borders using fake documents, forcing them to commit crimes or beg once in the UK, with the profits sent back to gang leaders in Romania. The operation successfully uncovered this sophisticated criminal organisation, leading to numerous arrests and the recovery of many trafficked children.

Operation Golf was significant in demonstrating the importance of international collaboration in combating transnational organised crime. It resulted in the prosecution of key members of the trafficking network and highlighted the ongoing challenges in preventing human trafficking and protecting vulnerable communities.
